CASE 1 Latur Municipal Waste Management

In the current scenario the upper limit of direct sales of various raw materials can reach as shown in the table.

No Processing of Goods considered As we can see here is in total around 60Cr.

Revenue can be generated against selling the collected waste in 5 economic years.

Direct Sales

In the current scenario the upper limit of direct sales of various raw materials can reach as shown in the table.

 No Processing of Goods considered

  • Direct selling of the goods is quiet easy and effortless activity since after segregation there is no requirement of further processing.
  •  The direct sales of the goods totally depends upon the market demand. Its not necessary that the segregated raw material will be sold on daily basis.
  •  Cost of the material is another issue to consider while selling.
  • Huge quantity directly affects the sale cost.  Weather condition directly affects the quality of material and its cost.
  • Transportation is an issue since the buyer most of the time wont pay for it.
  •  While collection the quality of the material also directly affects the sale and its value as-well.

Tender Details

To Carry out daily activities of collection, segregation, transportation etc.

Municipal Corporation of Latur District has established some guide line to perform.

The table shows the funds available for the activities.

  •  Waste management is highly profitable business
  •  It can generate huge opportunities of employment
  • Proper collection system ensures the environmental cleanliness
  •  There is huge shift of socio-economic status of rag pickers
  •  Directly it imprints its positive effects on environmental health
  •  Still there are questions that remained unanswered
  •  Can it be more profitable than existing
  •  Can it contribute more to the environmental health
  •  Can it generate more employment.
  •  Well the answer to these question is YES

CASE 2 Municipal Waste Management with Processing Facilities

Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM)

ISWM Hierarchy

Discussion :

  •   Each and every tiny bit of the waste can be processed and recycled into something useful product but that increases the input cost and is not feasible in the beginning. Instead a Hybrid system should be installed in the beginning to ensure continuous and sustainable growth.
  •  For starters some of the waste can be sold directly and some of it can be processed into useful products.

1.Primary Considerations for Development

2.Secondary Considerations for Development

Major Raw Material - Plastic

Intro to Pyrolysis Process

  •  Pyrolysis is a chemical reaction.
  •  This reaction involves the molecular breakdown of larger molecules into smaller molecules in the presence of heat and without the presence of oxygen .
  • Any Kind of Plastic can be recycled.
  •  The process is carried out in a closed reactor at 450ᵒC temperature.
  • No Hazardous Gas has been emitted to environment.
  • The Process converts Plastic into three basic different form of matter .
  1. PYROLYIS OIL (Liquid).
  2. CARBON BLACK (Solid)
  3. HYDROCARBON GAS (Gas) Products

Carbon Black – Carbon Black is the secondary product of plastic Pyrolysis process which have a wide range of Applications. The Carbon which produced after the Pyrolysis process has been used in Cement Industry, High Temperature Gasket making industry , etc..

Hydro-carbon Gas – The Gas which produced after the process is also a fuel. The Gas can been used in Dual Fuel Generators for producing Electricity. The gas which produced after the Pyrolysis process is reused to the reactor itself ,so that no other additional fuel need to be used in the process.

Pyrolysis Oil– Pyrolysis oil is the end product of waste plastic and tire Pyrolysis. Pyrolysis oil is widely used as industrial fuel to substitute furnace oil or industrial diesel. From 1KG of Plastic 400ml – 700ml of Pyrolysis Oil can be produced. After Distillation the oil can be used in Low speed Engine Automotive. The Oil can be used in Diesel Generator for producing Electricity. Calorific Value 10250 kcal/kg.

Intro to Biogas to CNG Plant

  • Biogas is the mixture of gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Biogas can be produced from raw materials such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, plant material etc. Biogas is a renewable energy source.
  •  Biogas is produced by anaerobic digestion with methanogen or anaerobic organisms, which digest material inside a closed system, or fermentation of biodegradable materials. This closed system is called an anaerobic digester, bio-digester or a bioreactor.
  •  Biogas is primarily methane (CH4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and may have small amounts of hydrogen sulfide (H2 S), moisture.
  • The gases methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide (CO) can be combusted or oxidized with oxygen.
  • This energy release allows biogas to be used as a fuel; it can be used for any heating purpose, such as cooking. It can also be used in a gas engine to convert the energy in the gas into electricity and heat. Biogas can be compressed, the same way as natural gas is compressed to CNG, and used to power motor vehicles
